Rooster park

I’ve known the Cawsand lot for three or four years now, over this time I’ve had some of the funniest sessions, sickest jams, best skates and definitely maddest parties of my life.  About two years ago Ross called me up to say they had somehow managed to get a grant for them to build there own little park, they soon found a piece of land and we set about deciding what they wanted, we ended up basing it on what I had at mine as the area they had was about the same size and steepness, about a month later we had our first session on the jump and quarter, since then they’ve added a little track, some more jumps and there’s a few rails in the woods.

The open day was class, right in the middle of the edible mushroom season which went down a treat with a few and not so great with others but all the riders had a good time except me, as I had just had my appendix out and spent the whole weekend sitting in a chair shouting abuse at the passing riders, I think some sort of white ninja fancy dress party went down but im not really sure.

The centre couldn’t be in a better place to one side you have some well fun free ride, to the next the ocean and some saweeeet clif jumps (don’t go without a local, but if you can find Leo and the tide is right get him to jump off the wall that I still don’t believe anyone’s ever jumped), to the other side you’ve got two sick skate parks (Millbrook and Torpoint) and in the distance a short drive away you’ve got Plymouth for all your late night needs.

Camping at makerhights is £5 per night and you can literally camp at the top of the Rollin and riding is free to all, the bays are looking to hold a event in October, keep your ears peeled.

So if your down this neck of the woods and wanna check it out, you can find rooster park on face book, but if your like Tuai and cant work a computer drop us a line and well put you in touch or you could just drive to Cawsand and listen for the shout of barnstormer, turquoise malfoy and crab apple.

Under an hour away you’ve also got our park and Josh the Mad Dog Madocks foam pit so well worth a trip to sunny Cornwall

Dog Custard aka Whiteeeeeeen 09

The sound of my dog barking like some crazed idiot signalled my lift had arrived. After we crammed the rest of my stuff in Nelly’s Citreon Picasso, we set off for Brighton. After discussion of choosing the best way to go, we realised that it didn’t matter which road we were driving on as the Picasso had a love for the middle of the road, rather than the lane it was in. Tuai forced me to drink some beers on the way, after which he had a massive whitey and passed out in the back of the car (see video). The traffic was pretty intense, people that deserved to be beeped got beeped, pretty much everyone else did too.

Eventually we arrived at Brighton after some sort of epic journey. We met up with a couple people, had a look at the big blue ramp then headed off to our Nazi Concentration Camp aka Caravan Club Campsite. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered such anally minded people in my life, they were proper strict and I think they just wanted us to be as far away from the rest of the campsite as possible. Not surprising really given Tuai was with us. After we (I) set up the tent (which was a right bitch), (ballshit pume, a midget with no legs or arms would have been more help than you). we headed down to the 24 Asda, finding a sweet wallride on the way.  An early night was had by all on that fine Thursday evening, after Tom displaying his culinary expertise, cooking a gammon steak in beer with spring onions and mushrooms. Tuai’s tortellini pasta tasted like crusty flaps so he proceeded to throw it at Tom.

We awoke in the morning, and headed down to the ramp, kindly driven by Josh’s dad Jeff (with a J, not a G). We had a look around the event, there was plenty going on, with young pups all around the place displaying their skills in fighting, rollerblading, army, cat roasting etc etc. The ramp was quite sweet, fairly mellow all round but it was lush. Most people were loving it, the bikers were being twats and snaking everyone at every chance they got, the bladers laid down some pretty epic spins flips blah blah, Tom did a tap indy backflip. There was “qualifiers” for the “ATBA International Freestyle Jam”, where there was only one international rider (Marco from Switzerland), unless you count Tuai. I can’t remember what went down, probably was nothing great. We went to bed super early, and got like 13 hours sleep which was immense. Everyone else partied it up like a bunch of loonies, apparently they had a lovely time.

Momma Shiz made us some coffee the next morning which was sweet, then we headed to the ramp to find we weren’t on until the evening. We had a swim in the sea, other than that we generally got bored all day until 6ish when the comp started.

Abbo and Rhys were splendid on the Mic, fair play, they russled the crowd into some sort of collective frenzy. Most people were there to see Tuai because he is so goddamned fit. The riding was fun, some of the things that went down were cork 7 train, a bs cork 5 train followed  by a fs cork 5 from Josh, Gary was flipping every which way with his usual gnar fest, Shiz landed a bs 5, Tuai was just generally fit all round really.

That night there was some sort of party, there was a massive dance pit where I gotta say that the salmon won hands down best move of the night.

We wanted to leave fairly early, so we got some food from Asda (where we had to wait half an hour before we could even buy anything) then got our stuff from the ramp. Carrying those deck chairs was a right bitch. We were glad to leave the campsite. The drive back involved more beeping, eating, and general nuisance on the road. A load more stuff did happen but right now I’m just doing this to put it up on the site because Tom is moaning. Maybe I’ll add to it later.

Thanks to the lovely people at the event, shame the security guards were a bunch of wankers.

try this at home

rodeo sequence

  • how to do a backflip 180 melon (i think)
  • Step1 Just as you reach the take off start to prewind your body then bend your knees to maximise popin ability in it.
  • Step2 Take off as if your going for a frontside five but before you get to 180 grab your board drop your front shoulder and look down, you might find it easer to bone your front leg at this point, I do.
  • Step3 Keep looking round, you probably will make it, but if not don’t blame me,
  •  Really though if you can see a trick in your head you’re a lot more likely to make it, but if you can’t id recommend a foam pit before giving it a go.
  • Step4 you see the landing pretty soon on this trick, don’t take you eyes off the little babber.
  • Step5 Let go of the board and it should come round naturally,
  • this is a really flowing trick so if you get the right motion off the lip the rest should just happen,
  • My back arm naturally points at the landing but if you are having trouble nailing this little badger that could be something to try.
  • Step 6 Land on your feet, ride away and claim like you’ve never claimed before.
  • To sum it up the whole of this trick is in the first 180 if you get that right you’ll be laughing, Also everyone has a different way of doing the same trick so don’t hold me to what ive said.
  • Next up how to Ollie frontfip with the king of frontflips MR Tom Read

BFC cream teas and jam final

Set off for the last round of ‘cream teas and jam’ at bugs boarding on Friday afternoon and after a pretty easy journey, arrived at Bugs, at 2 in the afternoon, and set about with Rhys Crilley Tom K, the rest of the bugs crew and anyone else available, to re- do the rails etc that were going to be used in cream teas and jam the next day.

A whole load of new stuff was built including a sweeeet new wall ride, a sketchy, fun little wooden roller courtesy of Joe Dickson and 2 new rails, which never got put in mainly because some wasps had decided to live where we wanted the rails, so we left them to it. That evening saw a chill out by the fire, with Joe Ds van providing music. A few more people arrived, Including Renny and Skully, who then swiftly left again for ‘a night out in Gloucester’. They had a wicked time.

Saturday morning started slowly. Breakfast for me consisted of a packet of Pringles as I hadn’t brought much food with me. Awesome.
The comp kicked off at about 1. Similar format to other cream teas and jam events. The hill was split up into about 4 zones, rider judged hour long session in each, with a break in the middle for the all important cream teas.
The first jam (on the jibs and rails at the top of the hill) kicked the comp of, with mad rail skills from everyone. Props to the younger guys who had some great jib skills namely the guy with yellow helmet (not Renny), who pulled some smooth board-slides (check him on the video).
The new wall ride was a firm favourite with everyone, especially Tom and Jamie who were spinning mad 3s and 5s over a 3m gap onto it.
We then moved on to session the quarter pipe and hip. Everyone was boosting huge Bs and Fs 180s out of the quarter, but the trick the stood out for me was a sick MJ stall on top of the quarter, (Sorry I forgot your name!). Awesome.
The hip saw rise to loads of tweaky grabs, Backflips and Bs spins of all shapes and sizes. Tom K pretty much dominated the hip. Flat Bs 5s, Backflips, you name it. what else can you expect from the world freestyle champion?
A random biker also decided to join us on the hip despite it being a mountain board comp. He got my vote.

After this we took a break for the cream teas, and a cool down it was bloody hot! (Thanks to whoever provided all the scones jam etc. was grand.)
After the break we had a fun little mountain board mini ramp session, which saw Jamie, and tom picking there noses a lot, and a fun game of ATB (the mountain board equivalent of SKATE).
On to the final jam, this took place in the bowl to the right of the big jumps, and was definitely one to remember. Numerous 3s and tweaks were thrown of the 2 north shore drops, and bonk variations aver the barrel. After a few more tricks I decided to grow some balls and hit the flat-down-flat box, which was scary as at first, mainly because of the lack of take off, and big drop of the end. However after my first hit, Renny and Tom joined me in sliding the box, and we did. Smooth board-slides from all. I also managed (almost. not quite cleared) gap to down, but the smile was soon wiped of my face on my next hit where I died (almost) so decided to stop, and watch those still standing: Tom, Renny, Stu Lugger and Jamie perform, various nose and tail bonk variations over the barrel jump. Basically it was an awesome session.

And that was it, last cream teas and jam competition. What fun.
Final results: Tom Kirkman (also won overall series)
                        Rory Mundell Perkins (me)
                        Renny Myles.
I left Saturday evening, so can’t tell you what party antics went down, so let your imagination run wild on that one.
Peace
Rory x

Supa Dupa bowl

filmed by bazzer kirkman.

Set off to the superbowl on Thursday for second round, or is it third round of ATBA UK champs this year? After an enjoyable train journey with lots of drawing, sweets and anticipation, we arrived at a relatively busy superbowl for a Thursday evening, skateboard stalls and slides went off on the sketchy metal mini as I was still without a board from the last weekend.

Friday showed the likes of Josh Maddock’s and co throwing it down on the new improved freestyle bowl. Props to Mark and the rest of superbowl for pushing the centre that much further along, lookin sweet!

Gnarly boarder cross shredders were up the hill and getting their practice and qualifying runs in well before I had woken up, however I heard Ben Rye once again got the fastest qualifying time into the elite. I decided to wonder up the hill when racing had stated, this event had the dilemma of the lack of a PA system, so there were no tunes bellowing out across the field and the sound of Ryan Slater’s mad commentating only reached so far with the use of a megaphone. The idea of bashing pots and pans was brought foreword by trampa riders who were out in Europe whilst the racing was going on. This made the racing atmosphere that much more exciting and fun, it kept the event running smoothly and was a nice change from typical tunes that are always played at each event. Can’t say much more about boarder cross cos I didn’t watch it! Well done to Matt Brindy, Max Rye, Tristan Huxley, Leo Gorman and anyone else who won!

The usual Saturday night party thing went off that night. I heard Joe Dixon’s voice shouting across the campsite, ‘Caves, everyone Caves’! Unfortunately I couldn’t join him, too busy making a sandwich in my tent, I wandered over to the warm fire where you could here Stevo’s hectic DJ set enjoying the night with the rest of the superbowl crew.

Reports of bad weather heading in on Sundays afternoon meant freestyle had an early start from around 9.30ish, to early for my liking. Two very trickable tables and a new quaterpipe gave riders a more versatile run this year, and if you happened to fall of there was the oblivious shouts from the crowd to hit the rail! New batch of young riders came out of superbowl this season from there summer camps making competition more exciting for under 14s. One of the young rippers coming out of the summer camps was Caitlin, beastin sweet grabbed front side ones and taking 1st place in Ladies freestyle in her first ATBA UK competition at only 9 years old, watch out for this one! Far too much crazing mountain boarding madness went down to mention, usual attempts of a 720 thrown down by Lawson David as well as a surprising attempt at some sort of backside rodeo I think I saw from Frank Adams.

Elite Jam went of as it usually does at the superbowl, shits, giggles and nerves loomed at the top of the hill as we were strapping in. Impressive riding from Myles with sweet Indy back flips for a nosno rider as usual, as well as backside corked five attempts. Kynan Goggin also on, showing off sweet front side three indys and corked five attempt which most people might have mistaken for and under rotated back flip three. Smiles for Reece Crilley have a good go at his first seven twenties. Josh Maddock’s got a third place for sweet riding through out the competition and doing some buttery front side corked fives. First place was a battle between Joe ‘Dicko’ and Matt ‘Brindy’ Joe had a sweet run of seven twenty on first jump, switchin it round in between the jumps and switch front flip on the last with back flips in the quarter. Matt took the win this time for his impressive switch runs, switch backside seven on the first to switch front five on the second, high five for matt for a double first and a wicked weekend.

Don’t forget there’s another round yet believe it or not!

This ones at Haredown 10th and 11th October, bring your woolly jumpers, see you there
