BFC cream teas and jam final
Set off for the last round of ‘cream teas and jam’ at bugs boarding on Friday afternoon and after a pretty easy journey, arrived at Bugs, at 2 in the afternoon, and set about with Rhys Crilley Tom K, the rest of the bugs crew and anyone else available, to re- do the rails etc that were going to be used in cream teas and jam the next day.
A whole load of new stuff was built including a sweeeet new wall ride, a sketchy, fun little wooden roller courtesy of Joe Dickson and 2 new rails, which never got put in mainly because some wasps had decided to live where we wanted the rails, so we left them to it. That evening saw a chill out by the fire, with Joe Ds van providing music. A few more people arrived, Including Renny and Skully, who then swiftly left again for ‘a night out in Gloucester’. They had a wicked time.
Saturday morning started slowly. Breakfast for me consisted of a packet of Pringles as I hadn’t brought much food with me. Awesome.
The comp kicked off at about 1. Similar format to other cream teas and jam events. The hill was split up into about 4 zones, rider judged hour long session in each, with a break in the middle for the all important cream teas.
The first jam (on the jibs and rails at the top of the hill) kicked the comp of, with mad rail skills from everyone. Props to the younger guys who had some great jib skills namely the guy with yellow helmet (not Renny), who pulled some smooth board-slides (check him on the video).
The new wall ride was a firm favourite with everyone, especially Tom and Jamie who were spinning mad 3s and 5s over a 3m gap onto it.
We then moved on to session the quarter pipe and hip. Everyone was boosting huge Bs and Fs 180s out of the quarter, but the trick the stood out for me was a sick MJ stall on top of the quarter, (Sorry I forgot your name!). Awesome.
The hip saw rise to loads of tweaky grabs, Backflips and Bs spins of all shapes and sizes. Tom K pretty much dominated the hip. Flat Bs 5s, Backflips, you name it. what else can you expect from the world freestyle champion?
A random biker also decided to join us on the hip despite it being a mountain board comp. He got my vote.
After this we took a break for the cream teas, and a cool down it was bloody hot! (Thanks to whoever provided all the scones jam etc. was grand.)
After the break we had a fun little mountain board mini ramp session, which saw Jamie, and tom picking there noses a lot, and a fun game of ATB (the mountain board equivalent of SKATE).
On to the final jam, this took place in the bowl to the right of the big jumps, and was definitely one to remember. Numerous 3s and tweaks were thrown of the 2 north shore drops, and bonk variations aver the barrel. After a few more tricks I decided to grow some balls and hit the flat-down-flat box, which was scary as at first, mainly because of the lack of take off, and big drop of the end. However after my first hit, Renny and Tom joined me in sliding the box, and we did. Smooth board-slides from all. I also managed (almost. not quite cleared) gap to down, but the smile was soon wiped of my face on my next hit where I died (almost) so decided to stop, and watch those still standing: Tom, Renny, Stu Lugger and Jamie perform, various nose and tail bonk variations over the barrel jump. Basically it was an awesome session.
And that was it, last cream teas and jam competition. What fun.
Final results: Tom Kirkman (also won overall series)
Rory Mundell Perkins (me)
Renny Myles.
I left Saturday evening, so can’t tell you what party antics went down, so let your imagination run wild on that one.
Peace
Rory x
